Money - money to make art and art that would make money. First off, Ji and I wanted to get the point across that you don’t need a lot of money to make art - it starts with the idea and concept and realizing that concept with the available resources. This point was illustrated by the work done by street artists in New York City and other major cities throughout the world. Artists use inexpensive material like chalk, packing paper and balls to create public art and as a result received notoriety from their peers and the art world at large. Ji also explaining that although he did not make money directly from his bubble project he did so indirectly. He was hired by his present employer because of the bubble project and was in Bishkek because of the bubble project. These are some of the points we wanted to get across when we created B’Us – making something out of nothing for very little money.

In the B’Art courtyard was an old soviet-era bus, which was used as storage for material artists no longer needed but didn’t want to throw away. It had no engine and the tires were flat so it wasn’t going anywhere. It was a shell of its former self. We wanted to make it useful again. As it turns out, a lot of the contemporary artwork coming out of Bishkek is video art. So we decided to transform the bus into a screening room which will showcase the work of Bishkek artists as well as artists from all over the world.

The interior design was inspired by the local transportation - both public and private. The interiors of the small mini buses that transported people all over the city were completely covered in monochromatic carpet, usually black, with curtains covering all the windows. In contrast are the cabs with brightly colored mismatched fabric covering the seats and sometimes the interior walls.

The fabric selected for the B’Us is of Uzbek design. It was selected because the colors reminded some of the young artist of the colors of the US flag – which made a connection to them and us. The interior walls and seats were covered with it, except for the curved ceiling which made the interior look somewhat like a yurt. The B’Art TV and video equipment was used and the B’Us was unveiled at the reception showing one-minute works by artists all over the world.Kendalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07494507963922176399noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6738000746490915204.post-14298433918397664212007-06-20T11:46:00.001-07:002008-12-10T06:17:53.049-08:00B'Us (part 2)<img style="float:left; We had the new name, a great logo and many creative ideas for B'Art (Bishkek Art Center). We still didn’t have any idea for the public art project. Here was our challenge: It had to be inexpensive (less than a few hundred dollars), easily executed within three days, and accessible to the general public (something simple and visual).

I started to look at the streets for any inspiration: Walls, garbage cans, ads… typical things any city offers. I wondered, “What is unique about the streets of Bishkek?” The answer was found on people. I realized many people on the street were in a squatting position. While it’s a rather uncomfortable position for most of people in the West, squatting is a very natural position for people in Kyrgyzstan. They socialize, relax and wait while crouching down, with their knees sticking up. They even do their business in bathrooms squatting, a nightmare for people who are not used to it.

For people in squatting position on the streets, their vantage point is low, so I wanted to create a piece which was small and placed low on the streets. Also known as the Tulip Revolution, a popular uprising leaded by Bakiev–the current president of Kyrgyzstan– forced the corrupt president Akayev to fleed the country, thus starting a new government. This revolution, which was backed by CIA, was a violent and traumatic event for the country. Thousands of people invaded Akayev’s presidential palace, looted shopping malls owned by Akayev’s family and destroyed private and public properties. Akayev fled the country in a rush aboard his helicopter.

I talked to several Kyrgyzs about this event and I realized the images of the looters carrying TVs, sofas and clothing out of the stores are still very much present in their consciousness. There was a sense of shame the whole world saw such a low point of their country.

Irony is that many believe the current president Bakiev is as corrupt – if not more corrupt – than the former president. As in most of the revolutions throughout history, we see the pattern of history repeating itself: The oppressive and corrupt power is ousted by opposing party who gain the popular support and ultimately the governing power by promoting freedom and justice. Once they’re in power, the exploitation, the corruption and the abuse of power start again. Think about the French Revolution, the Russian Revolution, the Cultural Revolution in China and more recently, Chavez in Venezuela.Ji Lee (pleasesenjoy.com)http://www.blogger.com/profile/06926932227167112367noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6738000746490915204.post-60841146832238967322007-06-19T06:54:00.000-07:002008-12-10T06:17:57.224-08:00Bishkek Street Art Project (Part 3)<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTnNA-tQSGUKInPVdkx4n3mX7_vG2MvPQ1fRfNUKwTRXO_ZrWo4g71KvHXjd2GU_uag2qAhnKuyEztIDWpk35185lTRLzxMpTHrwF6JQVtBqtUnrYuh1HIxR_mCvStCVmxFtNYiGXnXsWH/s400/IMG_3431.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5077768638895618402" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXxp5FKbJRqwCjB7ijGd2zRBllkr37lyLYEfbOhg-JFlbNt2bG-PrLFZOI0Efq1xJWXgMk5hV-nbtnX6-jHkCOwRL_VoAooNVkgT9iKkn_Aaf65TxcdlwGLQ15ZSvYfzl-7_a4veS94KU4/s400/IMG_3440.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5077768638895618418" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJ0RuluFux6Frc3-bcIEmWjMg28GgcslLOOHiE8kJViFpi_Dc8fiA-fX-N37zDP7Jc-kZOeFr9pJvMVhn_2nzdo42LiW-1bmcwCSsK6V-UuXaZuxtGBW2hZsgpNww-5OI2c-UPYlgfa3np/s400/IMG_3454.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5077768643190585730" />Ji Lee (pleasesenjoy.com)http://www.blogger.com/profile/06926932227167112367noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6738000746490915204.post-38972186254887815052007-06-19T06:53:00.000-07:002008-12-10T06:17:58.091-08:00Bishkek Street Art Project (Part 4)Based on these events, I created a series of small horizontal posters showing one-eyed tiny creatures carrying objects belonging to human, such as cell-phones, ipods, shoes, spoons, and so on. Higher above them, there is a flying helicopter with an American flag, carrying another one-eyed creature. A pair of boxing gloves is tied to the helicopter. The creature is meant to portray the new president Bakiev fleeing the scene by an American helicopter. It’s a well known fact that Bakiev is an enthusiastic boxer.

The illustrations in the poster are done deliberately in the style of cartoons, thus seemingly funny and harmless, however, they offer a much thoughtful interpretation. Cartoons are great vehicle for social criticism precisely because they seem so innocent and fun. Think about the Simpsons. It can only get away with its social and political commentary because it’s a cartoon.

The mini poster shows the parallel between the worlds of tiny-creatures who are looting humans’ belongings and the humans who are looting each other. It refers to the coup d’etat of 2005 while hinting the possible future as dissatisfaction with the Bakiev is growing among the Kyrgizs.

I observed the reaction of several passersby after the posters were placed. They stopped and looked and wondered with curiosity. Through an interpreter, I asked what they thought about the poster. Some asked: “Who are these creatures?”; “Why are these creatures carrying these objects?”; “I think they’re fleeing from a disaster.”; “Why is this guy in a helicopter?”; “Why there’s an American flag in the heli?”; “I think this is an American who’s coming to save them.” There were many interpretations I didn’t even think about. And that’s the beauty of art. Once it’s done, once it’s out there, it breeds a life of its own. It’s the observers who give the stories and its life.

The passers may not see the political connection in the small posters, which is perfectly fine. The fact is that for the most of people in this country, the idea of public art is associated with bronze sculptures of some communist political figures standing in the middle of a square. So, this kind of street intervention is something completely new for them. What’s important to me is that these posters stop them from their daily routine and invite them to think and use their creativity as an individual, something they are not used to do, due to many years of communist anti-individual regime.

<img style="display:block; We didn’t know what to expect or what we had to produce. We did know that we would be giving lectures, conducting workshops about public art to young artists who didn’t know anything about public art was. At our first meeting with Shaarbek he expressed the need for a new and fresh identity, collaboration between the young and established artists, a public art project, and a program to encourage the continued growth and development of B’Art: Bishkek Art Center. It all came together in a fantastic event.Kendalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07494507963922176399noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6738000746490915204.post-86165192174716008462007-06-16T20:34:00.000-07:002008-12-10T06:18:02.455-08:00I Heart Bishkek<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZNUxWlw6SPKIFJbGY33KJcAFGkxWkDG6NrjkJyHm2eqv2KUDkKOJeh-14iunoq586Zc3WgpPqrFRDSnPSV25FL081RsVkrZTUnnU2isnE2aP2UPbt7p4GtGk-8NTNuJs1f9Qwxw6SnR7j/s320/100_2699.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5076873736221843970" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhn9vXViaAUNWfSGHZxRUVW25tSyDrG9Mku-u8VVfSP08g5zbGcXHI-PHeyQszc_dOTxElH5zeMkvav0izX0wtRjNftPO2nrhRaVmgspBcXXfUF_Sl7Xz4xZtgj4Bw8MwUtggLzwGWBE3UC/s320/100_2697.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5076873740516811282" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmu41r3bgk58KVqu_eIgD8wf6QDR9T4bfdWwUCc2BJYhb3u4ElcgmRtYFY8mejRKuLaPVDCB26g8PWM9j38mTGwCion9QtP49WR2j5bJArW5uenuIKWav7gcjoQuMSNpIAddU6D5ZTgOHI/s320/100_2703.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5076873740516811298" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqzn20fhHK3-EG6vxX2TtRG3cRt5YpSjmB_NH2dh2Shx95fklT1bHTuRYQoAl1DvvG6XGuXwigZsc6yHRNYvlYRUvV2R3OsJV-dYFoFJmGBMMIvwA5hyLOoWmBrvY7CFc26GJl71jDhVRj/s320/100_2594.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5076873744811778610" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtSBxn69iM0YPhVJcfEHJKOnqn16epB1-172gLqbvbsNd9GUGrLMIws6v0UTrxoPmsf73LYGAQxR14-pr_lmpIyXeID3FJ-JmXBAeFzkcEu90r_UHBwhvXFmPRLyYZqFWE8fbSvknWosk5/s320/100_2817.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5076873744811778626" />
A few months ago I didn’t know a place called Bishkek existed. When Susie emailed me and asked if I’d be interested in working on a project here I had to Google and Google Earth it to see where it was. Thought I got a sense of the geography, the mountainous landscape, and history from the search engine, I didn’t a sense of the people and it’s the people that make this place most incredible. The Kyrgyz are beautiful, kind and generous. The short time we spent here has produced life-long friendships.Kendalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07494507963922176399noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6738000746490915204.post-78501911628605181452007-06-14T19:43:00.000-07:002008-12-10T06:18:02.943-08:00Who Knew?<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIUk6kr715C2FjfssvGNP2t0_c9A17ukX5RTWy-hPuZqWwOL0V6-sW_7rYOK9kI_8ps2ZIxnrKE2R6G84VTlWv0zBqHr4cNEdu6ujxHGOSZ2D7xxeb17Eoe5wDZViwcZQS9ozo6-a71454/s320/100_2576.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5076116941509452242" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQY8WCIkvFPT4rulSWZiK1EAuBwCArvM_Mk25P01B0zHOsfwLWaFPPX3iLbf_GKUzEVP3VKZXwjsuZEPYW6v-uTAB5sS4P4onaU6rQ89ZYkZHrxK38674EI5MCFjOoSUc_SrHpchE5CAED/s320/100_2719.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5076116941509452258" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRh3AOZFFJ_zMmQ91MNg-G33w4yvDy-ucWCMlVyC7ruT1HtT5U50UFTO_fR3Gi10-DAUtYawwHJeJbKLNZsRMWfWdh4DyWi97yuYDUM43sg84GfKYR_FyzXSRS4izopCvgCayv9auRJQt6/s320/100_2723.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5076116945804419570" />
In the vicinity of our hotel – the Silk Road Lodge – is a number of large, heavy, over designed concrete buildings. One in particular always peak our interest because there are always lots of cars and taxis parked on the sidewalk outside. We thought it was a casino, and part of it may well be. I always thought it was a municipal building because of the large sculpture of a man carrying a horse (you know, to illustrate the power of the people).

Last night Ji, Nastya and I passed this building on our searched for a restaurant to have dinner. We noticed a few teenagers hanging out outside and music coming from the inside. This was the first time we’ve seen the lights on in the place so we decided to investigate. Nastya peered through the window but Ji and I went to the entrance. A woman at the door said something in Russian but we just gave her a blank look (it turns out she was collecting tickets). She then let out a “whatever” sigh and instructed the young security guard to let us in. We followed the sound of the music into what turned out to be an enormous concert hall. Two levels and packed with screaming teenagers, babies, middle-aged women and a grandmother or two. On stage was a young boy in jeans and shirt belting out a tune. His backup dancers – girls also in jeans and red t-shirts trying to keep in sync with the choreography. But he was just the opening act. After singing one last song, the MC came out and introduced the headliner. The crowd was screaming – the room got pitch black. Suddenly the music started and flashlight-wielding girls danced on stage. Then the singer, dressed in what looked like a Christmas tree-lights coat, joined them. With every gesture of a lit arm the crowd screamed. We stayed till the end of the song, then had enough. Now we know.Kendalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07494507963922176399noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6738000746490915204.post-24986255293637931172007-06-13T20:26:00.003-07:002008-12-10T06:18:03.957-08:00Now that we have the logo, the real work starts!<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhliLDe5sOo6NZNxzUN73BdLAf-iKfWNpaeA7YKL9U1d4YJRVDm-4WsNVZ7A7i5auLSpQii8AmoNRLBF2Hm6Q-enSrZuCPzGCCDpjZTlO9xX8NZWa-704o02pPZ7Vech7CEtGD_l0kUzFoj/s320/IMG_3305.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5075759496144222306" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3bZLDvOdyl7Xyape-Wr7i2E5nMEG7topvXi4PkRdfeJhdhz6pLHYMHZmPmdODGN-a3K3XG0kNkai0Jxh1uA8GfSIwFBHZHY1CKcKL_33yznWs1k-1h2vkzoAOJXgybedjlcXUw57qxSkR/s320/IMG_3311.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5075759496144222322" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDUEe8vt-EPvbJqd7EI3VGUU3I5v6ODciMX1zX9DoF17FVixDx9BaPiConEMl59wB5yURqAqFZpgVJxq3FevHL4mwHXycD5xrYZj-Jvbi1pfBas1LCropjPtjIqJ0lGCOZSVyONrXFzKND/s320/IMG_3313.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5075759500439189634" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgevZAvIHdKZB-Ceb4CiLdvb3YKzmsKUNGmBOn22y-b6WdpX3mwqBqcGkkLQX93klvUJcyD-8Cp82DJ-rYIOa0cy30DO4V0Z0nw4U-vjMwIKv72CzBzfp3UgPfCuGljJAtFjO8r5H2rhQ03/s320/IMG_3310.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5075759500439189650" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpEpcWSP7XNyf2aghLTTwhmTeFypmpOtMPOiotmehf-5HdLbhuzekKf1JVvc19z46gCiYHLzaeezL4qjMLTCabCJLZJndVWZZlCDJhTj3DRtYatiCnJpiwITKKt-PHILujILWX9VbDdV1-/s320/IMG_3312.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5075759500439189666" />

Yesterday was the first hands on day. The first day where people actually were physically doing stuff: painting, cutting, cleaning, fixing... Truly exciting and fun! We wanted to apply the orange of the logo everywhere in a creative way. Since we don't have much money, nor time, everything had to be improvised. Instead of properly printing t-shirts, we created a stencil and spray-painted them. Kendal had the great idea of refurbishing the dilapidated bus in the sqaure and turn into a video exhibition space. This felt like one of the commercials I use to see on TV where start basketball players go to a local community for a day and paint houses and plant trees, etc. This time it was real. There was a real sense of excitement in everyone: to slowly see a run down art center into a new and energetic place with color and innovative ideas.Ji Lee (pleasesenjoy.com)http://www.blogger.com/profile/06926932227167112367noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6738000746490915204.post-70477019080991106682007-06-13T20:05:00.000-07:002008-12-10T06:18:04.305-08:00B'Art Identity<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2hI9jtZIPE8S2ObXUonmTT0qwPxY7z0a2We64py6xOUpa5q2B4SMCM25H3ZxZTl5xUmCZ-jGUcvayurT7F84_w9C05_ENWF9_C0fZCZQ9C0JVqxtBiMatbjCz7w4sArWCQTrxwHNNBFyI/s320/BART.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5075753783837718578" />

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0CwDMBPTmHqhdbi8HLyybH0-IkRzj0BRwdRR5yniNd-nQya4s7GLIxikRrkcBGQX3XOLO-VqKITBvunt7y2wdvPmfiv-uvmRYpcKMraB4PTLdI2-KiQIS1ZPbfvLKaFuvmmJoZclPkdT1/s320/BART_samples.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5075753788132685906" />

Our challenge for creating an identity for the art institute of Bishkek was daunting in the beginning. We needed a name, a logo and apply the finished logo to all kinds of things: main sign, t-shirt, pins, posters, stationery, installations within the institution. The process was truly a collaborative one. Everybody chipped in specially in creating the name.

We wanted a name which was simple, playfull and iconic and at the same time serious enough so people would take it seriously. It also had to be understood and appreciated by both eastern europeans and westerners. B'Art was the solution. We like the simplicity of its sound. The Cyrillic (Russian) "B" is iconic and represents the local culture. When the cyrillic "B" and "Art" come together, it embodies the fusion of the East and West. The uniqueness of the simbol is further enhanced by the apostrophe after the letter "B" which represents Bishkek. We came up with modular logo where "Art" could be replaced by any image of "Art" which could be relevant to the organization.

Bishkek Art Center was settled for the name of the institution for it said everything they represented in a short and simple words.Ji Lee (pleasesenjoy.com)http://www.blogger.com/profile/06926932227167112367noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6738000746490915204.post-24761241665406499032007-06-12T06:51:00.000-07:002008-12-10T06:18:04.940-08:00Adventure in Bishkek Land<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5h4CiCltPVF06pKHSyS_pxZxwsrN_Rk-igwoF6mDui0jhUSlyQQGCC89reCHznnTI2wEpc6wMvSPayDNijuLQ13ytPhyphenhyphensj5wsnn9snvJ5kbc-cgZMb8yLZubYh-SG5TTMKRWJkR4L6Xue/s320/100_2655.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5075180750308073874" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3kb3Ui-b7FG9QFtvHJaoa3Rmz-1dy8SxXTylkbRtppLqNT2UsxThl4FX2qcdf-b30zG5pUdQ_chyU3Dn7zqVDoI3Mpv_B0tpvN4saVBKptO7eSIlTm4lDZNXYDzRMNmkMClV5BNNayFYg/s320/100_2656.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5075180750308073890" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivdxODFfmb5d0TghYfZN5q3Zs1zkD5KiZ2hePCt4NK0qxVrFFFsOmvwgdVX0h5RERmkOn_RzFgR58PdGAiyIsh_6R01uHGvJ9IkWsx5wIAmuNk_l1QRe_niNUuH6cqgwh7zhBj9XqO0S9C/s320/100_2657.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5075180758898008498" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLzyvx92FdijFSb305p322xVSjKvGkZqYTHIcToLcQu0y_NMg_c2-_SrOuiNoK5k6AL7bWsaxxobjOopNAEndDS2fTopwOWPINmXYxajb7ToF0sp-fS4Kjwo7B1VKCEp1fJNcRbuuiWwuV/s320/100_2659.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5075180758898008514" />

Today was the first day back from Almaty and the first day we begin working on the art projects for B’Art (Bishkek Art Center). With the new name in place, the first task was to change all existing signs around the complex. Shaarbek pointed out that B’Art had a resident sign painter and we should ask if he’d be interested in repainting all the signs. So, we went to his studio, knocked - almost banging on the door a few times- but there was no answer. Just as we were about to leave, the door opened. There were about 5 people in the small one-room studio drinking vodka at 11 AM. Shaarbek explained what we wanted to do and the sign painter agreed but he’d do it tomorrow. Though I wanted him to do it today – he looked a bit too intoxicated to paint any sign. But before we can leave, one on the men wanted to know if that was real hair on my head. I asked if he’s like to touch it to find out. At first he didn’t want to but curiosity got the best of him – instant comrade. But before I could sneak out they insisted I have a couple drinks with them. I tried to explain that it was a bit early, but they wouldn’t hear of it. So I negotiated one drink. They quickly poured me a shot of vodka and I downed it in one gulp. Impressed, they shook my hand, pat me on the back and let me go. As I was leaving, the sign painter offered me the one middle-aged woman in the room. I kindly declined and got the hell outta there.

With that straightened out – we broke off into groups. One group went with Ji to buy paint. The other went with me to the market to look for t-shirts. The large market had everything. You can buy bread inches away from underwear. All the designer knockoffs had a presence as well as local craft and souvenir. I hope I have the chance to go back and do some serious shopping.Kendalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07494507963922176399noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6738000746490915204.post-7062073784635710462007-06-11T10:27:00.000-07:002008-12-10T06:18:05.620-08:00Kahzakhstan ain't like Borat<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgST5UykD_fMxgz4KiduvrAURy6qxkKrSyMeZX1eq1v5kXCbESAJWcUkfO0Hc_v2fE4bhyphenhyphenv9MLIrmR3d5-vAJ83FIZMJiUuRKpl1jfiqOIJ5KF27BDC3vYFPL_BQKIf0KNV8IBq6blDlFWC/s400/IMG_3291_3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5074867938242983938" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8hKl-i2Rj4UJ1ZRwwF0HEPGCVSazipCSYyolEBUcUXJS1dA7zWICxLUyDu84HYve4pJ1Z-qOgW1br8BwIZKxfZ-BE1ZfFMS3J0hJsU2ypmgOl5Sfewgk0l0W9BlxXtf8rUHpp1LcAaZ-6/s400/IMG_3293_3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5074867946832918546" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh58EN6t7pz9DvSgA7cNQKPm4OzfuGUYF6slV9GlJ_x4Z60nzD8OCKPAfcuwUL_yuuFiEa3x0u6uTBkMcaYNpi9FCRyKwKJ1FII9NPSDYejW4uQpM-cR7LwaqQYTlvoOI5Svnd1tzqqLcut/s400/IMG_3294_3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5074867951127885858" />
So after almost 4 hours of driving through the rural landscape of Kaza, we finally arrived at Almaty, the financial capital of the country. The first thing we encountered was a big traffic jam. And the cars were not the run-down soviet era metal boxes. I'm talking about Toyota, Audi, Mercedes, etc. Pretty fancy stuff. I mean, after seeing Borat where he gets in a broken car pulled by donkeys to go to the airport, this is a major contrast. Many expensive stores too: DKNY, Fendi, Channel, Armani, you name it, they have it. There were still many ugly buildings, reminiscent of the soviet era, but there certainly was an air of international cosmopolitanism. It felt big like São Paulo (where I grew up) because of the contrast between the rich and the poor and miles and miles of traffic jam. By the way, in Kaza and Kyrg, the driver's seat can be on both left and right side. So strange...Ji Lee (pleasesenjoy.com)http://www.blogger.com/profile/06926932227167112367noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6738000746490915204.post-89165463582285378432007-06-11T10:11:00.000-07:002008-12-10T06:18:05.771-08:00The Strangest, and Possibly the Creepiest Ad Ever?<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigOP3hHrNYfdivn4L5mo30x0CbXex3poLG2bjV1K2VOxtiW_jr6EfQ1BmQhA3Nr7aJjZfnROGPR6BAP9BQTiyB-Lwuq1MyVVulBVKO3ed3xpHqfmM-Sg3gOCcohHuKmE30BqbvoaHJAl7J/s400/IMG_3278_1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5074859515812116466" />

This ad was on the Kyrg side at the border of Kyrg and Kaza. Almaty is the former capital and the most populated and rich city of the country. We have a presentation to make at Almaty's contemporary art center focusing on the art of Central Asia.

After 30 min. drive from Bishkek, we arrived at the border and we went through the passport check point where I had the first glimpse of the country and from the border it looked just like Kyrgyzstan. Rural, poor, funny ads showing blode bimbos... It looked just like out of Borat. I was still very excited to be stepping on a yet another exotic country. The visible difference from Kaza and Kyrg was the people. In Kyrg, I felt almost half of the people were Asian. On the streets of Kaza, most of people looked Eastern European.Ji Lee (pleasesenjoy.com)http://www.blogger.com/profile/06926932227167112367noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6738000746490915204.post-18136935941783916542007-06-09T18:56:00.000-07:002008-12-10T06:18:07.234-08:00CMAK! And it was done collaboratively. Everyone was asked to bring in ten names to discuss. Some came with six, others with one that they supported to the bitter end. There were some new faces that did not come nameless and one person brought sentences.

All the names, most of them quite good, with one or two really bad ones were written on a piece of paper on the wall for all to discuss. For the first round, everyone voted to keep a name in for further discussion. After that round, we got it down to 27 then 18 and finally 5. After a delicious lunch break, we returned with full stomachs and fresh minds to pick The Name out of the final five.

The finalists were BAM (Bishkek Art Machine or Matrix) “B” being in Cyrillic, B’Art, Banan, ARTerium, and Bishart.

It was determined the Bishart was too generic and not as exciting as the others. Banan, which means banana, was too overused as a pop symbol and the older artists in the complex would see the name as a joke. ARTerium met the same fate as Bishart and the name conjured up images of blood, and medicine. BAM, one of my favorites, was the name of a large rail construction project that happened many years ago but remained in the minds of people today. Though it was not necessarily a negative project it’s the first thing that came to mind. B’Art remained. Though the majority of the participants liked it, Shaarbek was concerned that is was too localized to just Bishkek – the name had to be international. We convinced him, I think, that it was indeed international and fresh with immense advertising and promotional opportunities. In the end, al was happy with the process and the name, in the next few days we’ll be developing a logo and begin on the second public art component of this project.Kendalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07494507963922176399noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6738000746490915204.post-44950206436110637362007-06-08T12:27:00.001-07:002008-12-10T06:18:08.063-08:00Eat Meat! The topic of my presentation was “What is Public Art” and I showed the range and variety of public art from street art to million-dollar percent for art projects. Ji presented his 3D Alphabet, Abstractor, Circle Numbers and of course the Bubble Project. At the end of the question-and answer period Ji put out bubble stickers and pins. They went like hot cakes (or the Kyrgy equivalent). One guy took half the stack. The crowd was very receptive and thoroughly enjoyed our presentations, though we wished more artists attended.

After lunch we went back to the City of Artists (City) to meet the artists we’d be spending the rest of the time in Bishkek with. We introduced ourselves and began the process.

Shaarbek explained his vision for the City and we came up with three tasks:
1. Develop an identity. 2. Create a public art project that will encourage a collaborative environment between the younger emerging artists and the older, better established ones. 3. Create an ongoing program that will foster that collaborative environment long after we’re gone.

The first exercise was to come up with a name. This name will be the new identity of the City. We started with a brainstorm and the early contenders are: Dry-cleaning (the place used to be a drycleaners), Artarium, Noise!, Art-Bish, The Bubble, Experimental lab, and many more. This exercise opened them up to the process and to us and also got them ready for the homework. They, and the people they invited, are each required to bring at least 10 names to tomorrow’s workshop and their artwork or the work that inspires them. The goal is to have a name by the end of the day tomorrow.Kendalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07494507963922176399noreply@blogger.com60tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6738000746490915204.post-57360668221894183982007-06-07T19:54:00.000-07:002008-12-10T06:18:09.389-08:00First Impressions of Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipPySNRIiWOZtIhrARNYv8ao4CRobqj_prX8w1KkrLN9WpWG10qkN1V6SApsRFImZ-X3dkQa3GDVmHO_Y_oSekAlivSUfSblxFLpXAGvWZQ1KeqqNc5XGTikdeQXImHvkxooq65x_fcgnn/s320/IMG_3199.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5073689545245849506" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyN1LqlFwu1s-Ud7MYheLtsEj8mE7eGPBwVxWyjvZAyGWyim3BAaaJdPqeVpFNeMVR813mmSd9s1LW26fNW0W_TTxsNC-lBfJaInhLd0sAKhGD7WRlyjvFHgiaKogBXEHG6T4TPtxs6a21/s320/IMG_3213_1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5073688737791997778" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjTxOq08lHkVyRKT4soaMorQbyJxATwpd6WLtT9OVxOj9gOsF6WbwcIRDVQp8u61YaFIfpP3nIz2oTUuWzOLgw7lZ8cs-U34dFkZPTbrgDAkc9-_-yE4MyUvyMN0aDvF5Mgvj3s8x7yST_/s320/IMG_3201.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5073688742086965090" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhI0OZAR-9uish0YVb3GS334Mys3bZSU709xLWwOnt8HFGHEkb0y4Hbdrgh1qYXVg62KCg-3Vcw0u9DXTbCO_pf-qNbtw9mKo_gIDoB1-M-vAnavVd5kcxjuGrOOpIe08zqibqPX3AsEZ1/s320/IMG_3185.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5073688746381932418" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgz48QeqC3tlLoLJXhLUqKizW8k2MWQbLpeVHsxwsaYa_CCqNsyFpriaOQfa7VhotC89uOOiZPvMDS-5OSeNddvY23LgCqZGuA5_MdjOUrKgbnrGckm5AfNmsL3uDWANI-d5o4Ef7loQnAV/s320/IMG_3184.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5073688746381932434" />

Kendal, Jane and I arrived in Bishkek yesterday in the early morning. It was an exhausting trip: NY-London-Tblisi (Georgia)-Bishkek. The whole trip lasted about 20 hours including the waiting time. Bishkek's airport is a simple place. There were about 10 medium size airplanes, which more than half were US Military airplanes.

We were picked up by a local Kyrgy driver who took us to the hotel. During the ride, I had the first glimpse of the city which is very rural and green. The place is rather poor with simple housing and many soviet era cars and trucks. It made me think of my visit to Cuba. The first sign of Western influence was a huge billboard by Samsung advertising their cellphones. I was struck by Kyrgyzs people because many of them looked like south-east asian, just like me (Korean). Other half looked more like typical eastern-europeans.

It's 9:07 AM and I have to get ready for my Power Point presentation to the artists and local officals at the "City of Artists" where Kendal and I will be working on a public art project. It's an excting and challenging task.Ji Lee (pleasesenjoy.com)http://www.blogger.com/profile/06926932227167112367noreply@blogger.com80tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6738000746490915204.post-72460806984117193072007-06-07T19:31:00.000-07:002008-12-10T06:18:09.567-08:00Where the hell is Kyrgyzstan?<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimFoFmhsgBRvG0nDHAk-JVBp0l-QMQYD5fAmAxOB7PwC6VAPy7MI0gV5hGJmDhFGqsZu0OILLnVaZiD_prSMbwMkjPvMSk9JdGNgXDo7dTsIMteVYcWOOdy4rYMPHLaEX_sop6RFZa9FUs/s400/central_asia_map.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5073519413001320258" />
When I was told by Kendal we were going to Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan back in February, my first question was: "Where the hell is Kyrgyzstan"? I had never heard this place existed before. I had at least heard about Kazakhstan because of "Borat" which I'm told paints a very misguided picture of that country. But Kyrgyzstan? I had abosolutely no idea whatsoever. So for those who share my ignorance, here's the map. It actually borders China, Kazakhstan and two other "stan" countries. So next time someone mentions Kyrgyzstan, you don't have to scratch your head.

Note: The large white circle indicates Bishkek (the capital of Kyrgyzstan) and the small circle indicates Almaty in Kazakhstan. These are the two cities we'll be visiting in our journey. We'll spend most of the time in Bishkek doing our project. We'll be in Almaty for a few days for presentations to the local art groups.Ji Lee (pleasesenjoy.com)http://www.blogger.com/profile/06926932227167112367noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6738000746490915204.post-49743206469175548922007-06-07T12:36:00.001-07:002008-12-10T06:18:10.467-08:00The City of Artists<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAXyZWBTzJybwA-8zPshhcMFN8VKxRlr3XWVGbQAQaqN0qsvBRsJDicaJ3AGz7R7m0Kf5hyphenhyphenuJZgUY2dSjSsD5yRbpM0vkKedJ106CbI8O0fAU5yvRvREt88a4xqZBuI923QkEl2jzNR1bw/s200/100_2511.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5073409643234156466" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEHBRjww_sPD5rijECZEJK0MH1X6x-G1FnbGyki8mecd5R6WoSSgvtZVcKOdmuPMPEDt2KqsNObkC2JRJtzmJ3C5Pp4hgcmJr7sNCcBfvCT1DV2laE2jYBLwXCgWxKzu6oSFcM2v-RxTVT/s200/100_2520.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5073409643234156482" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgt_wSOfvZFjKHt-sRjxsmjMwER2fVlbfHSjzdc4Bn96zRj1N7jefuxwN8gLM51VHKgGmLM-c3r6Pig-u4s9MadCt6AuSfNoPRxz5m79y8UejHBRqqWiKgq2xhbbsSoJ2vDo9LZv6A2CHRR/s200/100_2521.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5073409647529123794" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqWamW1cDkVyHaR29VBuzp77HaQntPqzhjYtghatNNL_TaZiMe2pC7f9SYqtgskDgtD65hZEXW2rxEJODEoP8BwuNcVNKW0fJow236UgeR1Qm5zBfU-p02GbTCN3bGPmioJh2-srDWBkIm/s200/100_2530.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5073409647529123810" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPZvv4bh0W5z8Jj5hyphenhyphen25PxLmN-IjRt8_Wm1KPd9llR3NMEMwlm25YBEmnh4luqoqfqWHnDV95g58jQfuk7yLi1Q8FowVrphO3X5VoO3R7QpaTxrfJQfTwegqLlqHELbWRfq4YwzzT_uMAz/s200/100_2532.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5073409651824091122" />

The "City of Artsists" is an artist community with about 70 artists' studios each owned by the artists who occupies them.Kendalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07494507963922176399noreply@blogger.com0
